Walking is one of the healthiest modes of transportation. However, encouraging the public to walk (instead of driving a car or motorbike) to their destinations requires providing suitable infrastructure that makes their journey comfortable, safe, and healthy. A city like Karachi, which has a poorly designed and maintained walking infrastructure, fails to encourage the public to walk to their destinations. Moreover, the threat of getting mugged in a street crime and the weak public transport connectivity also discourage the public from walking on foot. As a result, we have witnessed people opting to travel on cars and motorbikes even for making short trips. Urban Nerves has prepared a short video to address some of the design and maintenance-related issues a person could experience while walking on the streets/footpaths of Karachi. We have identified some of the challenges and suggested improvements. Enjoy a visual reimagination of your journey walking on the streets of Karachi!
